It takes a lot of chutzpah to claim that the verse about Jesus making Peter the rock of his church made Peter the first pope, and that he had temporal and spiritual authority over all Christians.
As Charlie mentioned, Peter was called Satan by Jesus, and he denied Jesus three times. And in the letter to the Galatians, which is considered the most authentic of all letters attributed to St. Paul, he describes how he chastised the supposed first pope, Peter, for being fearful of what his Jewish buddies thought of him eating with Gentiles.
The Bible makes it clear that Peter is the apostle to the Jews and Paul is the apostle to the Gentiles, yet the Catholic Church claims Peter was the first Bishop of Rome, when there's no secular record of Peter even setting foot in Rome, when meanwhile, there are such records of Paul, and after all, he was a Roman citizen.
Catholic teaching is blatantly Pauline (no divorce, be chaste if possible), yet they claim that Peter was the first pope, and the only reason is because they need to rely on him for their authority.
