Stewart Lee and Richard Herring's interpretation of the "Parable of the Prodigal Son"
Christian Hipocracy at it's finest :)

nb: Remember, The word parable comes from the Greek παραβολή (parabolē), meaning "comparison, illustration, analogy." It was the name given by Greek rhetoricians to an illustration in the form of a brief *fictional* narrative. Nice even the Greeks acknowledged that most Christian tales were merely works of fiction then.
No Christian denies that parables are works of fiction. Their purpose, like Aesop's Fables, is to use allegory to deliver a particular message. What has brought on this sudden rash of Christian baiting?
ReplyDelete...and what particular worthy Message did this parable deliver Mary?
ReplyDeleteIt's just one in a long line of illogical (when you truly think about it)literary devices to change the way people back then thought.
This sketch from the 1990's always struck me as a wonderful way to point out that illogicality in religious thinking.
And it might even raise a wry smile from some people on this drab saturday Morning.
As for the "Christian Baiting"? Since when is it baiting to illustrate what is wrong with all things religion? Especially religions that come from a Jewish Historical source?
The more some people attempt to try and influence people by propagating Religions around here, the more i feel compelled to offer some sort of counter-argument to balance the debate.
I personally can't let anything the Jews gave us stand uncontested.
Monotheism appears not through amalgamation and syncretism but rather through the annihilation of other gods.(which is exactly what Judaism, Christianity and Islam done) Other "divine entities" were simply not recognized and taken on board into the pantheon; they are thrown over and left to drown. If they must be acknowledged, it is only done by a kind of deconsecration that demotes them to the status of demons and insists that they were never anything else. They are to be destroyed and plastered over. Their worshipers are attacked, and if they cannot be slaughtered like the prophets of Baal (see 1 Kings 18:40), they are ridiculed, mocked, and vilified.

Yeah, the prodigal son story never made sense to me.
ReplyDeleteThe story of the prodigal son is very hard to hear because it seems so unfair to the other son. But if you look hard, there is a lot of wisdom revealed.
ReplyDeleteThe prodigal son wasted his inheritance, but it does not say that the father took the remainder of his wealth and gave half of it to him upon that son's return. The comedians took liberties with that bit.
If we commit a mortal sin, we separate ourselves from God and we lose all the grace that we have stored up. This must be earned again. Moreover, while God will celebrate our return, the church teaches that after our sins have been forgiven, the sinner must still suffer temporal punishment. It is only after we have been cleansed of sin that we can go to heaven.
One major sticking point for people who are not Christians is that they view this story in the natural way rather than the supernatural. God is the father who loves us more than we can ever understand. The son in the story traveled far from home, spent all of his money, and then reached the bottom, becoming a lowly servant. He didn't just walk down to the pub and spend his money: he became a slave because of his sin. It was because of his suffering that the son came to repent his wasted life. He didn't return to his father to ask for more money, but only to ask for a job as a servant because he knew that his father treated his servants well.
ReplyDeleteThe point is not how much fun God will give us in this life, but that God's main interest is our eternal salvation. God desires that all of us come to repent from our sins so that we should live with Him forever. This is not a story about how the world's gifts are not fairly distributed.
You might say the jews unintentionally gave us Christianity by DENYING and murdering Christ. The church has been historically an opposition to jewry.
ReplyDeleteThe ones who would have you believe otherwise don't believe it themselves, but only use the idea that Christianity was some sort of jewish weapon to aid in its destruction.
The jews will always try to convince you that something is jewish if they know you will abandon it for that reason. That's why they tried to tell you that Hitler was jewish.
