Doubtful that the Abraham/Isaac attempted killing story actually happened in real life, regardless of the actual names (He mentioned it 37 mins. in). Its purpose was to impart Yahweh's desire for unquestioning obedience.
I think you you are accurate on that. Yahweh seems to like to keep his chosen ones always on edge in the OT. They are damned if they blatantly disobey and damned if they try to obey, but make a technical mistake such as in the sacrificial requirements (proper clothing, proper incense, blood smeared here and there. Make sure to ring a bell, don't touch the ark no matter what, etc. - insanity!)
