The exercise of power in a smaller non-technological world was once direct and brutal. That still exists, but TPTB have to rely on a pyramid of control. A pyramid made up of salaried public sector servants who really don’t know the bigger picture. It is sufficient that people are able to repress sympathies for those whose duress they cause in order to pay their mortgages. They may also believe at first — and I’m thinking of the police in particular — that they are on the right side of history. And it is true, public sector servants in general may represent the expression of the popular will manifested for the most part. But it is this skewing of the apparatus of government — e.g. the persecution of Richard Hall — that shows TPTB have possession of “cheat codes” not available to the rest of us.
This repressive state of being, which may have increased in recent years, will undoubtedly cause cognitive dissonance and consequently stress in public paid employees. When I was teaching, the failure to address the role in a common sense way was continually modulated by political motivated initiatives whose purpose was not to improve the education provided but to provide the wrapping of “something being done” . When the maths national curriculum was first introduced in the early 90s it was a Byzantine joke. Teachers were expected to give a nod to it – in say job interviews – in order to “progress”. I told them flatly at a job interview I had no respect for it.
The immediate consequences for telling it as it was, were financially not so good, but I’ve continually realised TPTB as manifested as “headteachers” etc are looking for “yes” men, but more often than not prefer “yes” women. When factored up across society, the control system represents a population of already compromised individuals who can then further their state of compromise and concomitant material “success”; they are “making something” of themselves you see…
The delegation of authority to centralised authorities however, means that the forces are skewed towards the welfare of the rich. “One law for the rich and one law for the rest of us,” as they say. The revolving door between finance and political life signifies the artificiality of democracy. It has occurred to me in the last day or two how the question of social class and wealth, very much a concern of the likes of most commenters here, is not something discussed. It has been replaced by the celebration of the multicultural society — aka making a virtue out of necessity — and the lately promotion of woke culture. Where is the voice of the ordinary provincial working class White man or woman in current discourses?
I do believe the “reach” of the TPTB, the state is less than people imagine. Sure, they can send the flying squad or the SAS etc., but real power these days resides in the media and the mindspace – the successors to a large degree of organised religion. But my observation is that like an army who may suffer from poor lines of communication, the pyramidal power structure is creaking.
TPTB of course know who “we” all are. There is no hiding behind pseudonyms. The reason I have for using my real name is because it allows me to identify with what I have written for pecuniary benefit. But beyond that it seems to me that while those unspeakable puppets who put out their BS on say “Question Time” by naturally waiving their anonymity make alternative voices seem cowardly, extreme, and subversive. The ordinary men and women of this country have become slaves of tipping their hat to what they don’t believe in order to get by and “make something of themselves”…
And I must say, the theme of the article may be one that informs, but it also sews the field with seeds of fear – something that suits TPTB IMO…
As was shown by the scamdemic, the people's greatest enemy was their own fears. Let’s push back by driving at 31 mph in a 30mph zone etc., and increase the cognitive dissonance of those paid public employees who by degrees, lack a real understanding of the difference between good and evil.
