Gas was never that cheap in the USA in the last 45 years.
1968 prices:
Gas was 34 cents a gallon
A pound of steak was around 39 cents
You could get a house for about 14 grand
A top-of-the-line 1968 Shelby GT-500 Mustang muscle car was $4300, about half a year's salary for the average worker or the price of about seven 1959 Gibson Les Pauls !
You could just walk into any guitar store back then & buy as many 1959 Gibson Les Pauls as you could afford at 600 bucks a piece !
