Not sure that Spartan culture was so honourable. The majority of the population were helots - slaves and treated very brutaly.
I reckon you're right about the slight changes in character names in similar myths referring to the same original. Changes in vowels can easily be explained because semitic languages didn't write down vowels early on so the exact pronunciation would be guesswork.
