Check out this guys YT channel. He travels all around the former Soviet Union and meets all sorts of crazy wonderful people. A lot of the villages and the suburbs of the cities are a bit grim to say the least but the people are great. And a lot of them say that life under Communism particularly under Breshnev was much better than it is now and have no time for Gorbachev who introduced "Perestroika" because that's when it all went badly wrong. What I do get from this though is that these people despite being poor have a far better quality of life than what we have in the West because all they have is themselves, food from the garden, a few pigs and chickens, some vodka of course and a roof over their heads.
