In a major national security speech
this spring, President Obama said again and again that the U.S. is at
war with “Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and their associated forces.”
So who exactly are those associated forces? It’s a secret. ***Read article at PRO PUBLICA***
Huffington Post reporter Matt Sledge characterized the feeling in the media room: "I've covered civil and criminal cases in federal and state courts (including a terrorism trial),
and the Manning court martial for eight months, and I haven't run into
an atmosphere quite as tense as today." Late in the day, New York Times
reporter Charlie Savage tweeted
that one of the armed military policemen who had swept the reporters
multiple times for cell phones and aircards—because they're banned—was
on his iPhone.
Of course, the press has already had to deal with restrictive
conditions and absurd government secrecy rules throughout the pre-trial
and trial proceedings that has made it difficult to report, and more
importantly, has stifled the public's access to the trial. Bu this marks
a new level. ***Read article at FREEDOM OF THE PRESS FOUNDATION***

As often as politicians and talking heads talk about "national
security," most Americans have no idea what they're really discussing.
Whether the National Security Agency or FBI has the legal authority
to demand that an Internet company divulge a hashed password, salt, and
algorithm remains murky.
"This is one of those unanswered legal questions: Is there any
circumstance under which they could get password information?" said Jennifer Granick, director of civil liberties at Stanford University's Center for Internet and Society. "I don't know." Granick said she's not aware of any precedent for an Internet company
"to provide passwords, encrypted or otherwise, or password algorithms to
the government -- for the government to crack passwords and use them
unsupervised." If the password will be used to log in to the account,
she said, that's "prospective surveillance," which would require a
wiretap order or Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act order. ***Read article at c/net***

This week’s deployment of Blackhawk helicopters in Chicago is only the latest in a series of “urban warfare training” exercises that have become a familiar feature of American life.
As elsewhere, this exercise was sprung unannounced on a startled civilian population. Conducted in secrecy, apparently with the collusion of local police agencies and elected officials, Democrats and Republicans alike, the ostensible purpose of these exercises is to give US troops experience in what Pentagon doctrine refers to as “Military Operations on Urban Terrain.”

By Nathan Fuller, Bradley Manning Support Network. July 25, 2013.
The government’s closing argument took up today’s entire Bradley Manning trial session, reviewing its evidence, inferences, and conclusions for each set of documents released, based on several weeks of witnesses. The prosecution alleged that Manning released to WikiLeaks because he felt an “utter disregard for this country…. no allegiance to any country,” which it called similar to the viewpoints of an anarchist.
