Weapons that fire blanks are very realistic, today. Stage weapons are offered that are very realistic. They do eject casings. They do cycle slides and bolts. The recoil and muzzle flash is weak. New squibs for bullet hits are air powered, now. These can be used without a licensed pyrotechnician on the set - making them relatively cheap to use. With enough experimentation, I think many people could easily rig effects like the one's seen here. Trivializing the importance of pre stacked bodies and the appearance of a dummy is weak, too. Not claiming to be an expert at anything but, I worked in Hollywood. On sound stages and location. As well as the years working in post production. I also have much more shooting experience than the average person...which really is not saying much. I know people who have owned as much as three gun safes full - to my 7 guns over a whole lifetime. I have fired at least 40 different guns. Never got real good with more than a few of them. No expert here. Back in the days of the Rodney King incident, working down in Hollywood in a 24/7 post facility, you get to see who owns guns. Not talking about the talent. The technical people were packing, though. And, that combined capability among professionals made us completely at ease with whatever the riots were doing down the street.

Blank rounds eject spent casings when fired - unless fired in a revolver, just like real ammo. They do not fire a heavy projectile, therefore do not offer as much recoil. In many instances, the amount of recoil firing blanks is not sufficient to push the slide/bolt hard enough to eject the spent shell casing and strip a fresh round from the magazine. In some instances, changing to a lighter recoil spring works. However, for theatrical purposes - which means the majority of the gun fire witnessed by most people - very realistic models of popular weapons are produced with a slide / bolt and spring combo to work reliably. If we assume the Jon-Erik Hexum story of 1984 to be true, the wadding that takes the place of a bullet in a blank round can inflict a fatal gunshot wound to the head at close range. They still produce large amounts of hot, high pressure expanding gas from the powder which continues to burn / expand when it leaves the barrel. At close range, car windows would be destroyed very much as if a live round were used. Videos online seem to prove that. Even a BB gun will completely shatter the tempered door window glass of a car just like we see in this video. Within a few months of the Giffords shooting, someone proved to me how fake it was. Absolutely obvious. Produced so poorly, it is almost as if they figured no one was paying attention. They have been getting away with this kind of nonsense far longer than I have been alive, after all. And not once have I spotted a dummy used in a scene or any kind of fakery in a provably real incident. Who knows. Maybe it is just the standards I set for evidence. Whether the shooter appears to be a patsy or just an actor...whether the narrative is ,"he took his own life" or,"he confessed" I give everyone of these so called perps their day in court. Innocent until proven guilty using verifiable evidence, admissible in a court of law. I realize this is a harsh test. But, these incidents are not simply one man's freedom. They are using these cases to justify removing the only thing standing in guard of everyone's freedoms. And, guess what? It isn't even a selfish thing. I lost my right to own firearms, years ago. Seriously. How many terrorists have you met? Lone wolf active shooters? Reverse cowgirl Mosque murderers? Kids that hated school enough to kill a bunch of school kids? How about Serial killers or their victims? I know. We all know someone who says they do. Hell. I read somewhere that Jimmy Dean smokes his own bacon. Now that is one tough son of a bitch!
You saw video of the Giffords shooting? Can you send me a link for it? As far as I know, the FBI only has Safeway security video of Loughner in the store prior to the event.
