You have great taste in music, Del, with this Canadian band.

As for the title, "Closer to Heart," it's a reference to the Fabian Society's motto about slowly and deliberately forging a new socialist world, closer to their heart's desire (as opposed to reality).

http://www.freedomforceinternational.org/freedomcontent.cfm?fuseaction=fabianwindow&refpage=issues

"This is the stained-glass window from the Beatrice Webb House in Surrey, England, former headquarters of the Fabian Society. It was designed by George Bernard Shaw and depicts Sidney Webb and Shaw striking the Earth with hammers to "REMOULD IT NEARER TO THE HEART'S DESIRE," a line from Omar Khayyam. Note the wolf in sheep's clothing in the Fabian crest above the globe."

I don't think that's what the song is about. Listen to the lyrics.

No, you're right that they're not calling for what the Fabians were/are, but I think they were aware of their use of that phrase by them aside from Kayyam's poem, and calling for their own remoulding of the world closer to the heart, led by artists and tradespeople.

Great post, Del. And BTW Scorpio, Charles Giuliani said the same thing about the song being about Fabian Socialism that fauxcapitalist said in the first comment.

From Wikipedia oy vey! -

(Geddy) Lee was born Gary Lee Weinrib on July 29, 1953 in Willowdale, (North York) Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Morris and Mary Weinrib (née Manya Rubenstein).

His parents were Jewish refugees from Poland who had survived liquidation of the ghetto in their hometown Starachowice, followed by their imprisonment at Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, during World War II. They were about 13 years old when they were initially imprisoned at Auschwitz concentration camp, close to the same age as Anne Frank at that time. "It was kind of surreal pre-teen shit," says Lee, describing how his father bribed guards to bring his mother shoes. After a period, his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. When the war ended four years later and the Allies liberated the camps, his father set out in search of his mother and found her at a displaced persons camp. They married there and eventually immigrated to Canada.

In Canada, Lee's parents gave him a Jewish education, with a bar mitzvah at age 13.

That's fine but it's still a stretch in my mind. The song seems to be a plea for more creativity and artistry in the world as far as I can tell. If you want to equate that with the Fabian Society then go ahead.

Not a stretch that it's related to them. I see three possibilities, all involving their knowledge of the Fabian's Society's use of that phrase.

1) They fully support the Fabian Society's subversive aims.

2) They support gradual socialism but aren't aware of how subversive and detrimental the Fabian Society's aims really were/are.

3) It's just a song based off the Fabian Socialism reference.

Option #3 is the most I can argue for at this point.

Their song, The Trees, would seem to show their opposition to communism, unlike John Lennon, with his song, Imagine, where he claimed that he didn't support communism, but he also claimed Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds wasn't about LSD, and the La's claimed There She Goes Again wasn't about heroin, and I don't believe either of them on that.

So perhaps they support, or at least did support Fabian socialism back in their days. We'll just have to do more digging, but there's no way in my mind that they had the "Closer to the Heart" reference without knowing about the Fabian Society.

Regarding Lee's Jewish ethnicity and heritage, he did explain the meaning of the Red Sector A song lyrics, that they were meant to conjure up popular images of 'Nazi death camps.' (my air quotes).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sector_A

"Geddy Lee explained the genesis of the song in an interview:

The seeds for the song were planted nearly 60 years ago in April 1945 when British and Canadian soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. Lee’s mother, Manya (now Mary) Rubenstein, was among the survivors. (His father, Morris Weinrib, was liberated from the Dachau concentration camp a few weeks later.) The whole album “Grace Under Pressure,” says Lee, who was born Gary Lee Weinrib, “is about being on the brink and having the courage and strength to survive.”

I was listening to the song a few months ago, and not being particularly attuned to the motivations of particular songs until really looking for them the past couple years, I thought it was conjuring up popular images of Nazis, and sure enough, his own statement proved me correct.

@Fau & Ittzdajooz - C Giuliani has used a Rush song as his opening music since the very beginning, going all the way back to his 'Oracle' days -- lol

Scorpio, if you're talking about the one he still has, I thought it was Geddy Lee of Rush singing, as the voice sounds so similar, but it's another Canadian band, Triumph, and the song Fight the Good Fight.

You are correct, Faux - thanks. At least I got the country right - lol.

About Giuliani's intro music. I remember it going to the point where the lyrics were saying " The good book says that it's better to give than to receive " This might have been when Del was hosting him but I'm not sure. I do remember that when Charles moved to that WN moron's "network", the bumper music shortened considerably.

To be clear, I'm not talking about Kyle.
