A Modest Proposal For preventing the Children of Poor People From being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and For making them Beneficial to the Publick,[1] commonly referred to as A Modest Proposal, is a Juvenalian satirical essay written and published anonymously by Jonathan Swift in 1729. The essay suggests that the impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling their children as food to rich gentlemen and ladies. This satirical hyperbole mocked heartless attitudes towards the poor, as well as British policy toward the Irish in general.
In English writing, the phrase "a modest proposal" is now conventionally an allusion to this style of straight-faced satire.
"A Modest Proposal" was way more than satire. When the Catholic Church enclosures were torched by King Henry VIII.. the peasants used to be able to stay and grow crops or feed their sheep on Church land. Also the Vagabond Law was passed in 1495. This immediately led to millions of homeless people, the large majority were children, who were sold into bondage for a coat, or a loaf of bread. Thus the term Rednecks came into being, it's original meaning: the white slaves only got the corn husks to eat, while the African slaves got chicken feet and whole cobs of corn. This extreme malnutrition led to the white slaves having red skin, the term has nothing to do with suntanned necks. As per usual history has been weaponized against us!
