He has promoted conspiracy theories about 9/11. Chossudovsky is the son of a Russian Jewish émigré, Evgeny Chossudovsky, and an Irish Protestant, Rachel Sullivan. Raised in Switzerland he moved to Canada and joined the University of Ottawa in 1968
