The Entire Internet Will Be Archived In Canada to Protect It From Trump
As Donald Trump careens towards the Oval Office, promising jail time for flag-burners
along the way, an organization that archives the internet for anyone to
peruse aims to create a full backup in Canada in order to protect the
digital library from censorship.
The Internet Archive is a US-based nonprofit that has been archiving the web for 20 years. So far, they’ve cataloged petabytes worth of web pages and claim to continue to archive 300 million new web pages each week. Their massive database allows the organization to run services like the Wayback Machine, which anyone can use to visit an archived version of most web pages, sometimes dating back years.
The group prefers to refer to itself as a kind of library, and as it noted in a blog post on Tuesday, “the history of libraries is one of loss,” whether through natural disaster or political regime change. With a potentially pro-censorship Trump regime looming, the Internet Archive isn’t taking any chances and is planning on opening an “Internet Archive of Canada” in the land of toques and Labatt brews. Digital information stored abroad wouldn’t be subject to US censorship laws.

Anti-Semitism Awareness Act Bill Passes Senate

The
U.S. Senate on Thursday passed the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which
seeks to adopt the U.S. State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism
so that the Education Department may consider it
in investigating reports of religiously motivated campus crimes. The
State Department defines anti-Semitism as “a certain perception of Jews,
which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical
manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish
individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions
and religious facilities.”
The bill was proposed by Senators Bob Casey, a Pennsylvania Democrat, and Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican, to “ensure the Education Department has the necessary statutory tools at their disposal to investigate anti-Jewish incidents,” according to a news release. The senators say the act is not meant to infringe on any individual right protected under the First Amendment, but rather to address a recent uptick in hate crimes against Jewish students. The bill is supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish Federations of North America and the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Casey listed the following examples of anti-Semitism in his explanation of the bill:

Saturday evening's chilling performance did not represent the first time Russian TV featured performers dressed in Holocaust-themed decor to perform in a reality show competition.

"celebrity" ice skaters, donning Holocaust-era Jewish prison uniforms
fitted with yellow stars of David, performed Saturday night on the

Olympic ice dance champion Tatiana Navka, along with her skating partner Andrew Burkovsjy, slid and glided across the ice, in their chilling performance accompanied by "Beautiful that Way," Jewish Israeli singer Acinoam "Noa" Nini's vocal version of the theme song from the heart-wrenching Italian Holocaust film "Life is Beautiful."
